J. MENDEL A/W 14 | MBFW

Long story short: J. Mendel, a fifth-generation French atelier, has evolved into a global luxury fashion house under the auspices of creative director Gilles Mendel. Founded in St. Petersburg in the 1870s as furriers to the Russian aristocracy, the house of J. Mendel relocated to Paris’s famed rue Saint-HonorĂ© following the Russian Revolution. Gilles Mendel took the helm as designer and CEO in 1981, having apprenticed in his family’s Paris atelier under his father, Jacques. Committed to taking his ancestors’ legacy of exceptional quality, savoir faire and uncompromising luxury to a broader stage, Gilles opened his first J. Mendel Boutique at Elizabeth Arden’s Fifth Avenue Salon in New York City. Quickly attracting a devoted clientele, he relocated his collections to a free-standing J. Mendel boutique at 723 Madison Avenue, an uptown landmark since it opened its doors in 1985. In October, 2013, the company expanded to a larger flagship boutique located at 787 Madison Avenue.

More recently, Gilles Mendel introduced J. Mendel accessories, handbags, and home furnishings. In recognition of his achievements in women’s fashion, Mendel was inducted into the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2003, and received the prestigious Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in 2011. Gilles Mendel’s signature luxe-femininity and effortless elegance has made the house of J. Mendel a red-carpet favorite among international royalty and Hollywood stars alike. His collections are carried at the finest stores across the globe.

LIE SANG BONG A/W 14 | MBFW

Long story short: “One good thing about being a fashion designer is that you can live in different ages,” states Lie Sang Bong, one of Korea’s most preeminent designers. Mr. Lie’s diverse influences range from the imperial love affair of Napoleon and Josephine, Korean poetry and calligraphy, Cubism, Bauhaus design, and 1930s film noir heroines.

After presenting his first collection, “The Reincarnation,” at Seoul Fashion Week in 1993, Mr. Lie quickly caught the eyes of Korea’s most notable fashionistas. Several years later, the mayor of Seoul voted Mr. Lie “Designer of the Year,” acknowledging his perpetual creativity and the growing commercial success of his brand. In 2002, Mr. Lie began showing his collections at Paris Fashion Week. The Fall-Winter 2014 collection marks Lie Sang Bong’s first show in New York during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

MICHAEL KORS A/W 14 | MBFW

Long story short: Raised in Merrick, Long Island, a suburban town 23 miles from New York City, Michael Kors revealed his eye for design at the age of five when he advised his mother, Joan, on her wedding dress for her second marriage. Kors went on to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan, where he studied fashion design. He left school to start his own label in 1981, following accolades for his work at Lothar’s, the trendsetting boutique on New York’s West 57th Street. The first Michael Kors Collection runway show was held for the Fall 1984 season; in its review, WWD referenced his “collection of haute, classic sportswear” and “elegant but minimal dressing.”

Michael Kors’ New York City-based company has seen significant growth beyond its ready-to-wear roots to its current status as a major design house in the luxury accessories arena (comprising handbags, footwear, sunglasses, watches, jewelry and fragrance) under the Michael Kors and MICHAEL Michael Kors labels.

Kors has been the recipient of numerous industry awards. In 2013, Kors was selected for the Time 100, the magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world; he also made the New York Observer's list of the 100 Most Influential New Yorkers. In addition to all of these accomplishments, Kors was a judge on the Emmy-nominated show Project Runway from 2004-2012, which was syndicated internationally.

“From the very beginning, I was convinced you could be sexy and sporty at the same time.” — Michael Kors
